The Spin Physics Detector (SPD) is the project at the NICA collider constructing at JINR (Dubna). Collisions of polarised proton and deuteron beams at energy up to 26 GeV and with luminosity up to 1e32 s^-1 cm^2 will provide a unique possibility to investigate the nucleon spin structure in the production of Drell-Yann lepton pairs, charmonia, prompt photons, high-pT hadrons etc. The detector is planned as a universal general-purpose detector for wide range of physics tasks. The physics programme, status of the project and perspectives for international collaboration will be reported.
